The Rivers State government pledges its dedication to the development of new towns.

The Rivers State government is actively working to realize the vision outlined in the Greater Port-Harcourt City Development Authority (GPHCDA) blueprint. Their focus is on creating new towns and attracting additional investments to the state.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed this commitment during his inspection visit to the GPHCDA office and project sites in Ikwerre local council. He emphasized the government’s determination to initiate more projects by establishing new cities within the state.

Governor Fubara acknowledged that while achieving the goal of a grand city may take longer than his current term, they intend to make significant progress in that direction. Their primary objective is to alleviate congestion in Port Harcourt and ObioAkpor while fostering development in other areas of the state through the creation of new cities.

Furthermore, Governor Fubara encouraged the GPHCDA to become self-sustaining by attracting investors who align with the state’s development objectives.

Desmond Akawor, the Sole Administrator of GPHCDA, pointed out that the agency had faced operational challenges since its establishment in 2009, partly due to its Public-Private Partnership structure. He mentioned that a new legal framework, initiated by the previous GPHDA board, has been refined by the current management and is awaiting presentation to the governor.

Akawor expressed optimism that with this new framework in place, they would extend their development efforts to other towns in Rivers West, Rivers East, and Rivers South-East, thus contributing significantly to the state’s progress.
