A renovator’s guide to safety

In the old days, if you wanted a big job done, you would call in the professionals. The trade counter at the hardware store would be for tradies, and consumers would shop at the other end of the store.

Today the distinctions are blurred. Wholesalers sell equipment and materials directly to consumers, hire shops carry a broad range of machinery, and consumers use the internet to learn how to attempt jobs they would never have considered before.

What’s more, the rise of reality TV shows like The Block has made renovators of us all. We see complicated projects done easily and affordably on TV, and so we want to save money and try these projects ourselves.

With a target audience for these shows within the 25-45 year old age bracket, it’s a concern to find that the biggest rate of injury falls within this group. This is the age when financial pressures are at their peak, so it’s hardly surprising that these TV shows have inspired this generation to have a crack at DIY.

Baby boomers, enjoying a well-earned retirement, are also well represented in the injury group. Those over 60 are prone to more frequent and severe DIY injuries – one US report suggests that the over 55s account for 47.2% of all finger amputations.

It’s telling that injuries suffered by professional tradesmen tend to be things like back pain, muscle stress and strain, and slips, trips and falls. On the other hand, the leading causes of DIY injury are grinders, lawnmowers, ladders, vehicle parts, welding equipment, power saws, electrical equipment and tractors. Injuries are most frequently reported on hands and eyes.

This suggests there is a real lack of knowledge about using equipment safely among DIYers. Unlike in the professional trades, DIY activities involve no safety education, and no regulation enforcing the use of protective gear.

Safety first

To protect yourself from injury it’s vital that you follow safety precautions before beginning your job, and continue these practices for the duration.

• Plan the job carefully and be aware of all potential risks.
• Wear protective clothing, including safety goggles and gloves.
• Use a dust mask when dealing with hazardous materials.
• Use the right tools, and keep them safe and away from children in between tasks.
• When working indoors, keep rooms well ventilated.
• When fixing or checking electrical equipment or appliances always switch off the power.
• Wear rubber soled shoes when working on electrics.
• Keep a chemical fire extinguisher in the house.
• When using power drills, avoid wearing loose clothing or jewellery, which could get caught.
• When climbing ladders, be careful not to lean in one direction.
• Finally know your limitations. It’s always a good idea to ask for help.
