Architects Advocate for Eco-Friendly Building Practices
Architects are urging for a shift towards construction practices that prioritize the environmental needs of Lagos.
This was the central focus of the annual Lagos Architects Forum, held from May 8th to May 11th, 2024, in Lagos, under the theme ‘Lagos Resilience and Climate Adaptation’.
In his keynote speech, Muyiwa Oki, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, emphasized the importance of integrating environmental sustainability into architectural designs. Oki, a British-Nigerian architect, highlighted the necessity of embracing innovation to address contemporary challenges while cautioning against repeating past mistakes.
According to Oki, adopting superior building materials and sustainable construction practices is essential to achieving the global goal of net zero carbon emissions. He advocated for a decarbonized built environment, emphasizing the significance of retrofitting existing buildings with systems designed for high energy efficiency and low energy consumption.

“In the UK, where 80 per cent of the buildings that will be in use in 2050 are already constructed, retrofitting is vital. This is why we have the least energy-efficient housing in Europe,” Oki explained.
In his opening remarks, David Majekodunmi, Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Institute of Architects, stressed the role of architects in safeguarding the environment. He emphasized the need to shape the built environment in ways that promote resilience and sustainability, particularly in light of climate change challenges.
Mobolaji Adeniyi, National President of NIA, reiterated the importance of adjusting building methodologies to align with contemporary realities. She emphasized the need for construction methods that prioritize durability and adaptability, ensuring that buildings can withstand evolving environmental conditions.
“By embracing innovative construction techniques and materials, we can create structures that contribute to the resilience and sustainability of our city,” Adeniyi affirmed.
